Tech-Career is an Israeli NGO founded in 2002 by and for Ethiopian-Israelis. The mission is to open the door for young Ethiopian-Israelis to qualify for well-paying and sustainable careers in Israel’s high-tech industries, established commercial enterprises and the public sector. To date, Tech-Career has succeeded in launching well over 500 young Ethiopian-Israeli men and women in firms from AT&T to Wix to government authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the National Police Force. Tech-Career addresses the challenge of young Ethiopian-Israelis (ages 21-30) who immigrated to Israel as children (or were born to immigrant families). They grew up with hard-working parents who struggled to support them in low-wage, often menial jobs. As young adults, their immediate need to earn a livelihood could otherwise lead them to unskilled jobs—and the danger of remaining among the ranks of the working poor. Tech-Career’s intervention makes a transformative difference in the lives of these young adults by reaching out and enrolling them in 6-8 month professional courses and gain certification in market-relevant technology. During their studies, the students reside in dormitories and gain “soft skills” support through workshops and mentorships developed in collaboration with senior executives at Israel’s most prominent high-tech firms. These firms are partners in end-of-year projects, site-visits and training in preparation for job interviews. Tech-Career works hand-in-glove with firms such as ByNet, Israel’s largest integrator company, which participates in developing course curricula and makes a commitment to hire half the graduates. Tech-Career’s growing Alumni Forum enlists successful graduates in their own career development as well as giving back by providing mentoring and tutoring to students enrolled in the programs they graduates. In recent years, well over 90% of graduates have gained placements in their fields. Tech-Career is now seeking to expand the scope and scale of its success. Tech-Career’s first campus, a Microsoft IT Academy, was founded in Kibbutz Nachshon in central Israel, However, the limited accommodations of the Kibbutz did not provide the space needed for Tech-Career’s natural growth. In November 2016, Tech-Career moved its enterprise to temporary facilities in the city of Lod. Tech-Career is working closely with municipal officials to plan a permanent campus. A permanent home in Lod is enabling Tech-Career to expand its market-relevant course offerings, increase its staff and inspire a city in the midst of urban renewal. The new campus will further boost Tech-Career’s role as a national model for advancing entrée into tech careers in fields in very high demand.
