The GFH is the world’s first Holocaust Museum and the only museum that was established by Holocaust survivors, among them survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The Ghetto Fighters’ Kibbutz and the museum were founded in 1949 as symbols of personal and national revival. They became the fulfillment of a dream and an imperative - a living enterprise, and not a monument. The museum thus echoes the choice of life that coexists with the preservation and commemoration of the past.
Since its inception, the founders had collected documents, works of art, photographs, objects, and established what has become one of the largest Holocaust archives with about 2.5 million items. The collection became a wellspring from which permanent exhibitions grew. The founders themselves were the first docents, accompanying their guidance with testimony. The “House” that they have built was a place that fosters humanism, promotes civic responsibility, and celebrates the triumph of the human spirit.
We are both humble and proud to continue their vision/mission which is as relevant today as ever.
